Red Supergiants 2007-2011

Red Supergiant stars are bright stars above 8 solar masses that are nearing the end of their life. They have extremely large radii and produce incredible amounts of dust. Since space-dust is a product of star formation, understanding how much space dust is produced through different astrophysical sources can lead to understanding

Asteroids 2010

In the last decade, we have discovered thousands of asteroids in our solar system. However we have had relatively few missions to study them in space. Of course, we can study meteorites (asteroids that have hit the earth) but we do not have any telescopic measurements of asteroids that have hit the earth. Until 2008 TC3. I spent the summer of 2010 at the Search for Extra Terrestrial Intelligence studying asteroids similar to 2008 TC3.

Saturn's Rings 2009

Saturn's rings have amazed and mystified people for hundreds of years. One method of studying the rings is called an occultation. An occultation is when a bright star passes behind saturn's rings. Imaging this star quickly gives us a picture of saturn's rings that depends on the speed of the camera rather than the resolution. This method can drastically increase the resolution of the data but at the cost of only getting a one dimensional image through the rings.
